Livestock refers to farm animals kept or raised for consumption, work or leisure. For purposes of surveys, livestock covers only those that are tended and raised by operator.
In Kalinga, the major livestock (carabao, cattle, goat and swine) total inventory as of January 1, 2023 was 64,790 heads higher by 17.63 percent as compared to the same period in 2022 with 55,079 heads, as illustrated in Table 1.
Figure 1 shows that of the 64,790 heads total inventory of major livestock as of January 1, 2023 in Kalinga, 34,626 heads or 53 percent of it were swine. Carabao contributes 19,657 heads or 30 percent of the total inventory of major livestock, cattle have an inventory of 8,100 heads or 13 percent of the total inventory. Goat contributes the least with an inventory of 2,407 heads or 4 percent of the total inventory of major livestock in the province.
It was observed that all kind of major livestock in Kalinga increased in inventory as of January 1, 2023 compared to the same period in 2022 except for the inventory of cattle. It decreased by 1.42 percent from 8,2147 to 8,100 heads. Swine has the highest increased in inventory with 36.60 percent from 25,348 in January 1, 2022 to 34,626 in January 1, 2023 followed by goat with 24.78 percent increased. Carabao has the least increased with 0.37 percent. See figure 2.

Major poultry (chicken and duck) inventory was 311,788 birds as of January 1, 2023 lower by 5.72 percent as compared to the same period in 2022 with 330,687 birds. See table 2.
Chicken contributes 206,537 birds or 66 percent of the 311,788 total inventory of major poultry and duck contributes 94,415 birds or 34 percent as of January 1, 2023. See Figure 3.
Chicken total inventory as of January 1, 2023 was 206,537 birds lower by 29,735 birds or 12.59 percent as compared to the same period in 2022 with a total inventory of 236,272 birds while duck inventory increased by 10.31 percent from 95,415 birds as of January 1, 2022 to 105,251 birds as of January 1, 2023. See Figure 4.
TECHNICAL NOTES
The Livestock and Poultry Performance Report presents the performance situation in terms of inventory of carabao, cattle, goat, swine and by type of chicken and duck; and volume of slaughtered/dressed in the slaughterhouses and poultry dressing plants. Moreover, data for this special release were collected by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) through the two (2) major surveys, namely: The Backyard Livestock and Poultry Survey (BLPS) and The Commercial Livestock and Poultry Survey (CLPS), data collection for livestock and poulrty farms is done quarterly.
Another survey that supplements the data requirements of the Livestock and Poultry sector is the Compilation of Data Slaughterhouses and Poultry Dressing Plants (CDSPDP). This is done monthly and utilizes administrative data from National Meat Inspection Service registered and approved Licensed to Operate Meat Establishment (NMIS-LTOMEs) and Locally Registered Meat Establishments (LRMEs) in the province which is in coordination with the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) and Meat Inspectors (MIs).
