This Special Release presents data on death certificates registered at the Local Civil Registry Offices in the ten municipalities of the province for the fourth quarter of 2020 and 2021 and forwarded to the Office of the Civil Registrar General. Data were tabulated from the DVSS. Thus, statistics presented here is preliminary.

Number of Registered Deaths in Mountain Province is Soaring High

Based on the result of the tabulation from the Decentralized Vital Statistics System (DVSS) of the Philippine Statistics Authority, registered deaths in Mountain Province reached 355 in the 4th quarter of 2021. This is alarming since it is 43.15 percent higher than the recorded deaths in the same quarter last year at just 248. In 2019 of the same quarter, the figure is at 259.

About Four in Every Ten Deaths in the Province are Registered in Bauko

According to records by municipality, Bauko recorded the most number of deaths in the 4th quarter at 115 which is 36.51 percent of the total deaths listed in the province. This means that about 4 in every 10 deaths in Mountain Province are recorded in this municipality. This is followed by Bontoc at 85 deaths or 23.94 percent of the total and Paracelis at 34 deaths or 9.58 percent. Barlig and Sadanga registered the least number at just 9 deaths. In the same quarter of 2020, Bontoc listed the highest number of deaths while Natonin registered the least.

A huge increase in the number of deaths is observed in the top 3 populated municipalities. Deaths in Bauko soared to as high as 76.92 percent since its registered deaths of 65 in the 4th quarter of 2020 jumped to 115 in the same quarter this year.
 
While most of the municipalities increased in the number of deaths, Sadanga and Tadian posted an opposite trend. Its recorded death in 2020 is higher than their deaths in 2021. Meanwhile, Barlig registered the same number of deaths.
 
More Male Deaths are Recorded in the Province
 
Of the 355 deaths in Mountain Province during the 4th quarter of this year, 55.49 percent are males. Seven municipalities recorded more male deaths than their female counterpart with the municipality of Bontoc pushing the overall increase in terms of provincial data.
 
Sabangan is the municipality with highest difference of female deaths. Of the total deaths in this municipality, 64.71 percent are females. In 2020, male deaths are still higher than the female deaths.
 
About Three in Every Ten Male Deaths are Registered in Bauko
 
Comparing the records of the different municipalities of Mountain Province in terms of male deaths, 61 male deaths or 30.96 percent are registered in Bauko. This means that about 3 in every 10 male deaths happened in Bauko. Bontoc came next at 46 male deaths and Paracelis at 22 male deaths. For female deaths, Bauko still registered the highest number. About 1 in every 3 female deaths in the province is listed in this municipality.

Almost All Deaths are Timely Registered

According to registration status, 96.06 percent of all the registered deaths in the province for the 4th quarter are timely registered. Death records in Barlig, Natonin and Sadanga, Sagada and Tadian are all timely registered.
 
The highest number of late registrations are recorded in Bontoc and Paracelis.
 
Male Deaths Have a Higher Proportion in Terms of Late Registration
 
According to sex and registration status, more late registration is seen for male deaths. Of the total male deaths registered in the 4th quarter, 5.58 percent are late registration. For female deaths, late registration is at 1.90 percent.
 
About Five in Every Ten Deaths are Married
 
According to marital status of the dead, 165 or 46.48 percent are married; 30.70 percent are widow/ widower; and 22.82 percent are single.
 
A different trend is seen for Bauko. Of the 115 deaths recorded in this municipality, 58 or 50.43 percent are married; 28.70 percent are single and the remaining percentage are widower/ widow.
 
According to sex, about 6 in every 10 male deaths are married. For female deaths, about 4 in every 10 deaths are widowed and the highest number is registered in Bontoc.
 
 
About Three in Every One Hundred Deaths in the Province are Less than 1 Year Old
 
Of the total registered deaths in the province for the 4th quarter, 9 or 2.54 percent are less than 1 year old. This is 1.90 percent lower than the recorded deaths of less than 1-year old babies in the same quarter of 2020 at 4.44 percent. According to registration status of these baby deaths, 8 are registered timely.
 
About One in Every Ten Deaths is 71 to 75 Years Old
 
According to age group, most of the deaths in the 4th quarter are from age group 71 to 75 years old. 40 deaths or 11.27 percent are listed in this age group. This is followed by age group 81 to 85 years at 10.99 percent.
 
Of the 71 to 75 years old whose death certificates are registered in the 4th quarter, 57.50 percent are males while 40.50 percent are females. In the same quarter of 2020, the highest number of deaths are recorded by age groups 76 to 80 and 86 to 90 years with 22 deaths each.
 
About Six in Every Ten Deaths Occur at Home
 
According to place type, majority of the deaths in the 4th quarter occurred at home with 218 deaths or 61.41 percent. This is lower by 3.91 percent compared to the deaths that happened at home in the same quarter last year.
 
Bontoc is the highest contributor of deaths that occurred at home with 29.01 percent followed by Tadian at 21.60 percent. All deaths in Barlig, Natonin, Sabangan, Sadanga and Tadian happened at home.
 
By sex, 54.59 percent of the deaths that occurred at home are males while 45.41 percent are females.
 
About Four in Every Ten Deaths are Attended by Hospital Authority
 
Of the registered deaths in the 4th quarter of 2021, 132 or 37.18 percent are attended by hospital authority. Majority of which are registered in Bauko. This is higher by 4.12 percent compared to the same quarter last year.
