Chicken inventory

As of January 1, 2023, total chicken population reached 274,205 birds. In comparison with previous year’s stocks, the number of birds was higher by 7.9 percent. By chicken type, inventory of native/improved chicken was estimated at 264,611 birds or 13.9 percent higher than the record a year ago. On the other hand, layer slightly decreased by -1.9 percent compared with previous year’s level of 9,776 birds. Both native/improved chicken and layer were raised in smallhold farms. For the 2023 reference date, broiler recorded zero stocks. (Figure 1 and Table 1)

Of the total chicken population as of January 1, 2023, native/improved chicken inventory accounted for 96.5 percent and 3.5 percent comprised the inventory of layer. In previous year’s same reference date, native/improved chicken shared 91.4 percent to the total chicken population; broiler, 4.7 percent; and layer, 3.8 percent. (Figure 2 and Table 1)

Duck Inventory

Duck population as of January 1, 2023 dropped by 4,262 or -8.5 percent from the previous year’s count of 50,022 birds. The 2023 inventory came from semicommercial and smallhold farms at 56.6 percent and 43.4 percent, respectively. (Figures 3 and 4, Table 1)

In January to March 2023, monthly farmgate prices of live chicken native/improved were lower than the corresponding prices of previous year’s same period. Its lowest drop was observed in March at -29.6 percent. On the other hand, live duck monthly prices showed a decreasing trend during the period and previous year. Its highest increase was registered in March at 27.0 percent. (Figure 6 and Table 2)

CONCEPTS AND DEFINITIONS

 

Animal Population (also Animal Inventory) – the actual number of animals (in head/bird) present in the farm as of a specific reference date regardless of ownership.

Poultry - a collective term for all domesticated avian for the purpose of food
consumption, or the carcass of such avian are processed for human consumption.
 
Native/Improved chicken - a common backyard fowl hat is a mixture of native breeds
and foreign breeds which includes Banaba, Bolinao, Kabir, Bantam, Paraoakan, and
Heritage Chicken such as Rhode Island Red (RIR), Barred Plymouth Rock (BPR), and
Black Australorp (BA).
 
Broiler – strains of foreign breeds of chicken, especially raised for meat purposes
only.
 
Layer – foreign strain chicken regardless of age, raised mainly for egg production.
 
Duck – a general term for waterfowl.
 
Goose - a large waterbird with a long neck, short legs, webbed feet, and a short bill.
Generally, geese are larger than ducks and have longer necks and shorter bills.
 
Turkey - a large, domesticated bird native to North America, having a bald head and
(in the male) ret wattles that is hunted or raised for its meat.
 
Farmgate price - the price received by raisers for their produce at the location of farm.
Thus, marketing costs such as transport and other marketing cost (if any) incurred in
selling the produce are not included in the farmgate prices.
 
Commercial Farm (Poultry) - refers to any poultry farms which satisfies at least one
of the following conditions:
• Tending at least 500 layers or 1,000 broilers
• Tending at least 100 layers and 100 broilers if raised in combination
• Tending at least 100 birds of duck regardless of age
 
Backyard Farm - refers to any farm or household tending at least one bird and does
not qualify as a commercial farm.
 
Based on PSA Board Resolution No. 04, Series of 2022, revision in the classification
for livestock, from backyard and commercial to smallhold, semi-commercial, and
commercial farms with the following definitions by animal type, to wit:
