Production

Corn production from January to March 2023 was posted at 1,258.42 metric tons, indicating a drop of -32.3 percent from the first quarter of the previous year's output of 1,858.49 metric tons.

By corn type, a drop in white and yellow corn was 14.49 metric tons or -100 percent and 585.58 metric tons or -31.8 percent, respectively, from the first quarter of 2022. Both levels of decrease this period were higher than the levels of decrease recorded a year ago. (Figure 1 and Table 1)

Yellow corn production shared 100 percent during the first quarter in 2023. In 2021 and 2022, more than 99.0 percent was shared by yellow corn to the total output during the reference quarter. (Figure 2 and Table 2)

Harvest Area

The January to March 2023 harvest area for combined corn type contracted to 353.49 hectares or by -17.8 percent, from 430 hectares in the same period of the previous year. (Figure 1 and Table 2)

Yield per Hectare

Yield per hectare this period was lower at 3.56 metric tons or a decrease of -17.6 percent, from 4.32 metric tons yield in the same period of 2022 but surpassed the yield registered in 2021. (Figure 1 and Table 1)

CONCEPTS AND DEFINITIONS

The data collection for the January to March 2023 reference period was conducted during the first 10 days of April 2023.

Crop Production- refers to the quantity produced and actually harvested during the reference period. It includes those harvested but damaged, stolen, given away consumed, given as harvester’s and thresher’s shares, reserved, etc. However, it excludes those produced but not harvested due to low price, lack of demand and force majeure or fortuitous events, etc.

Harvest Area - refers to the actual area from which harvests were realized. This excludes crop areas that were totally damaged. It may be smaller than the area planted.

 

Types of Corn

Yellow Corn - type of corn used generally as feed grains. It includes all types of corn other than white.

White Corn- type of corn used primarily for human consumption.

Metric ton - refers to a unit that is being used which is equal to 1,000 kilograms.
