1. Philippines
Headline inflation in the Philippines rose further from 4.9 percent in April 2022 to 5.4 percent in May 2022. This was the highest recorded inflation since December 2018. In May of the previous year, inflation was lower at 4.1 percent.
2. Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR)
Following the trend at the national level, inflation in CAR rose to 6.9 percent in May 2022, from 6.3 percent in the previous month. In May 2021, inflation in the region was observed at 2.8 percent. The higher inflation in the area was mainly due to the higher annual increase in the food and non-alcoholic beverages index at 6.4 percent in May 2022.
Also, contributing largely to the uptrend of inflation in the region was transport with an inflation rate of 24 percent in May 2022, from 22.4 percent in the previous month and 7.4 percent in the month of the previous year.
Annual hikes were likewise higher in the indices of the following commodity groups:
- Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, 6.9 percent;
- Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, 6.5 percent
- Restaurants and accommodation services, 6.4 percent; and
- Personal care, and miscellaneous goods and services, 3.1 percent.
- Clothing and footwear, 2.9 percent;
- Recreation, sport and culture, 2.3 percent;
- Health, 2.0 percent;
The indices of the rest of the commodity groups had zero percent annual growth during the month. (Tables 5 and 6) Education services and financial services had the most stable prices, evident by their zero percent inflation rate.
3. Benguet
Similar to the trend at the national level and at the regional level, inflation in Benguet increased to 9.6 percent in May 2022, from 9.4 percent in April 2022. In May 2021, inflation in the province stood at 2.5 percent.
Transport Services posted the highest inflation rate among the commodity groups at 35.3 percent. It was followed by Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages at 10.0 percent inflation rate and Restaurant and Accommodation Services at 9.1 percent.
Meanwhile, only Education Services had recorded deflation among the commodity groups. Prices for the said group deflated by 0.7 percent.
Contributing also to the uptrend in the inflation in the province were the higher annual increments registered in the following commodity groups:
- Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, 7.2 percent;
- Housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels, 5.9 percent;
- Personal care, and miscellaneous goods and services, 5.6 percent;
- Clothing and footwear, 5.0 percent
- Recreation, sport and culture, 3.3 percent;
- Health, 2.9 percent
- Furnishing, Household Equipment and Routine Household
- Maintenance, 2.1 percent
- Information and Communication, 1.4 percent
The rest of the commodity groups either retained their previous month’s inflation rates or had zero percent annual growth during the month.
4. Baguio City
Baguio City likewise increased to 5.9 percent in May 2022, from 5.2 percent in April 2022. In May of the previous year, inflation in the city was 2.3 percent.
Transport Services posted the highest inflation rate among the commodity groups at 15.1 percent. It was followed by Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages at 11.3 percent inflation rate and Restaurant and Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco at 8.1 percent.
Meanwhile, only Health services had recorded deflation among the commodity groups. Prices for the said group deflated by 0.2 percent.
The following commodity groups also contributed to the uptrend in the inflation in the city:
- Housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels, 3.8 percent;
- Personal care, and miscellaneous goods and services, 2.9 percent;
- Furnishing, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance, 1.8 percent
- Education services, 1.3 percent
- Clothing and Footwear, 1.3 percent
- Recreation, sport and culture, 1.2 percent;
The rest of the commodity groups either retained their previous month’s inflation rates or had zero percent annual growth during the month.
