The Cordillera Administrative Region produced a total of 3,145 MT of carabao, 4,430 MT of cattle, 26,747 MT of hog and 813 MT of goat in the year 2015 (see Table 1).

The highest production for all animal types was recorded in the province of Abra. Kalinga placed 2nd in hog production and Ifugao for cattle. For carabao, Apayao was recorded the 2nd highest producer among CAR provinces while Benguet for goat. On the other hand, Mt. Province was noted to have the least production for carabao and goat.

Hog production dominated the region’s total livestock production with about 76% contribution. Cattle recorded a share of 13%, followed by carabao and goat with 9% and 2%, respectively (see figure 1).

Poultry Production

  • About 60% of the total poultry production in the region for the year 2015 was contributed by chicken, followed by chicken egg at 28%. Both duck and duck egg shared 6% each on the total output.
  • Of the total chicken production, more than half or about 54% was produced by the province of Ifugao. Benguet contributed 17% while the remaining 29% was shared by the provinces of Abra, Apayao, Kalinga and Mt. Province. Ifugao and Benguet were also the top producers of chicken egg in CAR with 36% and 27% share, respectively. For duck and duck egg, Kalinga and Ifugao were noted to have the highest production (see Table 2).

Livestock and Poultry Inventory

  • The total carabao inventory in CAR as of January 1, 2015 stood at 86,023 heads. The highest inventory was recorded in the province of Abra with 36,875 heads or about 43% of the region’s total inventory. Mountain Province had the least inventory with 5,949 heads.
  • Cattle inventory in CAR as of January 1, 2015 was 59,856 heads with the province of Abra contributing about 35% of the total cattle population, followed by Ifugao at 20%. Kalinga and Mt. Province both had a share of 15%, Benguet 10% and Apayao with only 5%.

  • Of the 196,385 total hogs in the Cordillera, 26% of which came from Kalinga, 18%from Mt. Province and 17% from Abra. Apayao, Ifugao and Benguet were almost at the same level with 13% contribution each.
  • About 56% out of the region’s total goat inventory of 70,615 heads was contributed by the province of Abra. Benguet followed with 16% and the remaining 28% was the aggregated share of Kalinga, Ifugao, Apayao and Mt. Province.
  • The total chicken inventory of CAR reached 1,583,046 birds as of January 1, 2015. Ifugao had the highest inventory among CAR provinces.
  • As of January 1, 2015, the region’s total duck inventory was 205,027 birds. Kalinga and Ifugao contributed the biggest share of 40% and 37%, respectively.

 

 


Technical Notes


Inventory (also, Animal Population) - refers to the actual number of domesticated animals present in the farm at a specific reference date.

Livestock -refers to farm animals kept or raised for consumption, work or leisure. In general, poultry is separated as a distinct group of farm animals. For purposes of censuses and surveys, livestock covers only those that are tended and raised by an operator.

Livestock/Poultry Production - refers to the volume of indigenous (locally-raised) animals disposed for slaughter plus animals exported or shipped-out for slaughter both in liveweight equivalent.

Poultry - is a collective term for all domesticated avian for the purpose of food consumption or, the carcass of such avian dressed/processed for human consumption. Fowl is a term used to refer to a specific group of avian sharing common anatomical characteristics, e.g. chicken, turkey.
