Headline Inflation

The headline inflation or overall inflation of the province for the bottom 30% income household eased to 3.6 percent in August 2024 from 4.8 percent in July 2024. In August 2023, the inflation rate was higher at 5.2 percent. (Figure 1, and Tables A and B)

Main Drivers to the Downward Trend of the Headline Inflation

The downtrend in the overall inflation in August 2024 was primarily brought about by the slower annual increment of food and non-alcoholic beverages at 2.5 percent in August 2024 from 4.8 percent in the previous month. Also contributing to the downtrend was housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels with an annual drop of 5.2 percent during the month from a 5.5 percent annual increase in July 2024, and transport with 5.2 percent from 6.5 percent.

Lower annual increment was also noted in the index of educations services at 13.8 percent from 14.0 percent.
On the contrary, the index of the following exhibited a higher annual increase during the month:
a.    Clothing and footwear, 1.2 percent from 1.1 percent;
b.    Furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance, 2.6 percent from 2.5 percent;
c.    Health, 3.1 percent from 2.9 percent; 
d.    Recreation, sport and culture, -0.1 percent from -0.2 percent; and
e.    Personal care, and miscellaneous goods and services, 2.8 percent from 2.7 percent.

The indices of the rest of the commodity groups retained their respective previous month’s annual rates.

Main Contributors to the Headline Inflation

The top three commodity groups contributing to the August 2024 overall inflation were the following:
a.    Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels with 44.3 percent share or 1.59 percentage point; 
b.    Food and non-alcoholic beverages with 27.0 percent share or 0.97 percentage points; and
c.    Transport with 9.0 percent share or 0.32 percentage point. 

Food Inflation

Food inflation at the provincial level for the bottom 30% income household  eased to 2.6 percent in August 2024 from 5.0 percent in the previous month. In August 2023, food inflation was higher at 11.1 percent. (Table C)

Main Drivers to the Downward Trend of Food Inflation

The deceleration of food inflation in August 2024 was primarily brought about by the slower inflation rate of rice with 15.5 percent in August 2024 from 16.8 percent in the previous month. 
Moreover, lower inflation rates during the month were noted in the following food groups:
a.    Corn, -3.4 percent from 6.9 percent;
b.    Flour, bread and other bakery products, pasta products, and other cereals, 3.4 percent from 4.7 percent;
c.    Meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals, 4.4 percent 4.5 percent;
d.    Fish and other seafood, -3.5 percent from -1.7 percent;
e.    Milk, other dairy products and eggs, 2.4 percent from 2.6 percent; and
f.    Vegetables, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas and pulses,          -16.0 percent from -5.1 percent.
In contrast, the following commodity groups registered higher inflation rates during the month:
a.    Oils and fats, -1.6 percent from -1.7 percent; 
b.    Fruits and nuts, -6.3 percent from -4.1 percent;
c.    Sugar, confectionery and desserts, -4.1 percent from -4.8 percent; and
d.    Ready-made food and other food products not elsewhere classified, 6.1 percent from 5.7 percent.

Main Contributors to the Food Inflation

The top three food groups in terms of contribution to the food inflation during the month were the following:
a.    Cereals and cereal products, which includes rice, corn, flour, bread and other bakery products, pasta products, and other cereals, with a share of 117.8 percent or 3.06 percentage points; 
b.    Meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals with a share of 16.8 percent or 0.44 percentage point; and
c.    Fruits and nuts with a share of 6.3 percent or 0.16 percentage point.
