Number of Teenage Mothers is Increasing

Based on the result of the tabulation from the Decentralized Vital Statistics System (DVSS) of the Philippine Statistics Authority, teenage mothers in Mountain Province reached 84 in the 4th quarter of 2022. This was 31.25 percent higher than the recorded number of teenage mothers in the same quarter of 2021. In the 4th quarter of 2020, the figure was at 95.

About Five in Every Ten Teenage Mothers are Listed in Bauko

By municipality, Bauko recorded the highest number of teenage moms in the 4th quarter of 2022. This comprised 48.81 percent of all the registered teenage moms in the province. This was followed by Paracelis at 23 teenage moms. The registered births in these 2 municipalities covered 76.19 percent of the total teenage mothers listed in Mountain Province. In the same quarter of 2021, Bauko was still the municipality with the highest number of teenage mothers.
Sabangan and Tadian were the municipalities with no reported teenage mothers for the 4th quarter of this year.

15-Year-Old Girl- Youngest Mother

The youngest age of a mother who gave birth in the 4th quarter of 2022 was 15 years old. In the same quarter of 2021, the youngest age of a mother who gave birth was still 15 years old.

According to birth order, the youngest mother who already gave birth to her 2nd child was 16 years old; for her 3rd child was 20 years old and for her 4th child was 20 years old.

In the same quarter of 2021, the youngest mother who bore her 2nd child was 16 years old while the youngest who gave birth to her 5th child was 22 years old.

Males Slightly Outnumbered Females in Terms of Registered Births

According to sex, it was noted that there were more males than females who were born in Mountain Province in the 4th quarter of 2022 at 573 births. This was 6.70 percent higher than the female births at 537.

The difference of male births to their female counterparts in 7 municipalities contributed to the higher number of male births in the province. Paracelis registered 14 more males than females while Sabangan had 9 more boys than girls.

It was also observed that Bauko posted the highest number of female difference as it registered 11 more female than male births. The other 2 municipalities with higher number of female births than their male counterparts were Natonin and Sagada.

About Eight in Every Ten Births are Registered Timely

Of the 1,110 registered births in the province in the 4th quarter of 2022, 900 births or 81.08 percent were registered timely. Bauko having the highest number of births recorded 551 timely registered births while all births in Sabangan were late registrations. Five municipalities- Barlig, Natonin, Sadanga, Sagada and Tadian had more late than timely registrations.

Paracelis on the other hand had the highest number of late registrations for birth. Of the 150 births registered in this municipality, 62 births were late registrations. This was far higher compared to the births registered late in the different municipalities in the province.

According to sex, 80.28 percent of the male births were registered timely while 81.94 percent of the female births were also registered timely. Paracelis had the same number of timely registered births for both sexes.

About Three in Every Ten Births in the Province are Illegitimate

Of the 1,110 births in Mountain Province in the 4th quarter of 2022, 352 births or 31.71 percent were illegitimate. This means that about 3 in every 10 babies registered in the province were born out of wedlock. It was also noted that all births registered in Sadanga were legitimate.
 
Of the total births registered in Paracelis, 44 percent were illegitimate. This means that about 4 in every 10 births in this municipality in the 4th quarter of 2022 were born to unmarried parents.
 
Categorizing by sex, illegitimate births was higher among male than female babies. 32.29 percent of the male births registered in the 4th quarter were illegitimate. In comparison, 31.10 percent of all female births were also born to unmarried parents. All female births registered in the quarter in Sabangan were legitimate.

About Three in Every Ten Births are First Born

According to birth order, 29.46 percent were first born children. This translates to about three in every ten births in the province in the 4th quarter this year were first born. In addition, 26.76 percent were 2nd born and 21.98 percent were third born babies. The mother with the highest number of children who gave birth in the 4th quarter this year bore her 10th child.
In addition, 2 women gave birth to their 10th child. One was a 34-year-old mom registered in Paracelis while the other was a 46-year-old woman and was listed in Bontoc.

About Three in Every Four Births in the Province are Attended by a Physician

Of the total births registered in the province, 75.32 percent were attended by physicians; 3.78 percent were attended by midwives and 2.25 percent were attended by nurses. The remaining percentage was either attended by hilot/ unlicensed midwives or others.

About Two in Every Ten Mothers Who Gave Birth are 25 to 29 Years Old

Of the total women who gave birth in the 4th quarter of 2022, 23.96 percent were under the age group 25 to 29 years old. This was followed by age group 30 to 34 years old at 21.89 percent and age group 20 to 24 years old at 20.81 percent.

According to single year, the highest number of mothers who gave birth this quarter was aged 29 years old at 65 births. This means that about 6 in every 100 women who gave birth this quarter were aged 25 years old.

The oldest mother who bore a child this quarter was 48 years old.
