Number of Teenage Mothers is Increasing

Based on the result of the tabulation from the Decentralized Vital Statistics System (DVSS) of the Philippine Statistics Authority, teenage mothers in Mountain Province reached 352 in 2022. This was 64.49 percent higher than the listed number of teenage moms in 2021 at 214. In 2020, the figure was at 330.

About Four in Every Ten Teenage Mothers are Listed in Bauko

By municipality, Bauko recorded the highest number of teenage moms in 2022. This comprised 44.89 percent of all the registered teenage mothers in the province. This was followed by Paracelis at 114 teenage moms. The registered births in these 2 municipalities covered 77.27 percent of the total teenage mothers listed in Mountain Province. Sabangan was the only municipality with no registered teenage mothers during the year.

In 2021, Bauko was still the municipality with the highest number of teenage mothers.

13-Year-Old Girl- Youngest Mother

The youngest age of a mother who gave birth in 2022 was 13 years old. Two 13-year-old girl mothers were listed and they are registered in Bauko and Bontoc. In 2021, the youngest age of a mother who gave birth was 14 years old.

According to birth order, the youngest mother who already gave birth to her 2nd child was 16 years old; for her 3rd child was 17 years old; for her 4th child was 20 years old; and the youngest who already bore her 5th child was 20 years old.
 
In 2021, the youngest mother who bore her 2nd child was 16 years old; for her 3rd child was 18 years old, while the youngest who gave birth to her 4th child was 19 years old.

Males Slightly Outnumbered Females in Terms of Registered Births

According to sex, it was noted that there were more males than females who were born in Mountain Province in 2022 at 2,094 births. This was 5.60 percent higher than the female births at 1,983.
 
The difference of male births to their female counterparts in 8 municipalities contributed to the higher number of male births in the province. Bontoc registered 47 more males than females while Bauko had 35 more boys than girls.
 
It was also observed that Sagada and Tadian were the only municipalities with higher number of female than male births. Each municipality had 6 more female than male births.

About Eight in Every Ten Births are Registered Timely

Of the 4,077 registered births in the province in 2022, 3,139 births or 76.99 percent were registered timely. Bauko having the highest number of births recorded 1,859 timely registered births. Six municipalities- Barlig, Natonin, Paracelis, Sabangan, and Tadian had more late than timely registrations.

Paracelis on the other hand had the highest number of late registrations for birth. Of the 692 births registered in this municipality in 2022, 400 births or 57.80 percent were late registrations. This was far higher compared to the births registered late in the different municipalities of the province.
 
According to sex, 77.32 percent of the male births were registered timely while 76.65 percent of the female births were also registered timely.

About One in Every Three Births in the Province is Illegitimate

Of the 4,077 births in Mountain Province in 2022, 1,407 births or 34.51 percent were illegitimate. This means that about 1 in every 3 babies registered in the province in 2022 was born out of wedlock.
 
It was also noted that the highest proportion of illegitimate babies was registered in Paracelis.
Of the total births registered in this municipality, 45.52 percent were illegitimate. This means that there was a slight difference only for the number of legitimate and illegitimate babies in this municipality in 2022.
 
Categorizing by sex, illegitimate births was higher among female than male babies. 34.64 percent of the female births were illegitimate. In comparison, 34.38 percent of all female births were also born to unmarried parents.
 
All municipalities recorded illegitimate babies during the year.

About Three in Every Ten Births are First Born Babies

According to birth order, 29.31 percent of all the registered births in Mountain Province during the year were first born children. This translates to about three in every ten births in the province this year were first born babies. In addition, 26.27 percent were 2nd born and 20.19 percent were third born babies. The mother with the highest number of children who gave birth this year bore her 15th child.

In addition, the woman who gave birth to her 15th child was 44 years old and was registered in the municipality of Sadanga.

About Seven in Every Ten Births in the Province are Attended by a Physician

Of the total births registered in the province, 71.16 percent were attended by physicians; 3.31 percent were attended by midwives and 2.28 percent were attended by nurses. The remaining percentage was either attended by hilot/ unlicensed midwives or others.

About One in Every Four Mothers Who Gave Birth is 25 to 29 Years Old

Of the total women who gave birth in 2022, 25.83 percent were under the age group 25 to 29 years old. This was followed by age group 30 to 34 years old at 21.36 percent and age group 20 to 24 years old at 21.12 percent of the total.
 
According to single year, the highest number of mothers who gave birth this year was aged 25 years old at 242 births. This means that about 6 in every 100 women who gave was aged 29 years old.
 
The oldest mother who bore a child this year was 49 years old.
