Recorded Deaths in CAR decline by 7 percent

  • In the Region, there were 30 deaths each day on average, or one death every hour during the 1st semester of 2022.
  • In the first semester of 2022, there were 5,389 recorded deaths in the Cordillera Administrative Region. The figure shows a decrease of 7% death incidence from the 2021 figure of 5,793. Almost all provinces reported a drop in the number of deaths reported during the first semester of 2022, with the exception of Apayao and Abra, which saw increases of 12% and 6%, respectively.
  • Of all the provinces, Benguet recorded  the most deaths during the first semester of 2022, accounting for 1,242 total deaths, or 23% of all recorded deaths in the Region. Following closely were Abra with 879, Kalinga with 602, Mt Province with 494, Apayao with 453, and Ifugao (448) with fewest fatalities reported.
  • With 1,271 documented deaths, or 24% of all deaths in the region, Baguio City has the highest deaths overall.
  • During the same period last year, Baguio City accounted for 1,440 deaths, or 25% of all registered deaths in the Region. Benguet followed with 1,308 deaths and Apayao with the fewest recorded deaths at 405.

More Male deaths in CAR

  • Deaths in the Region occurred mostly among males which accounted for 3,052 or 57%. On the other hand, females shared 2,337 or 43% of the total deaths registered. The higher number of deaths in males than females resulted in a sex ratio of 131 male deaths for every 100 female deaths.

Nearly 4 in every 10 Deaths were medically attended

  • Thirty nine percent registered deaths in the Cordillera Administrative Region received medical attention. If private doctors, public health officials, and hospital staffs are present when a person passes away, the death is regarded as having medically attended.
  • Deaths registered during the 1st semester of 2022 which were attended by others is recorded at 37%, while 24% were not treated medically.
  • Of all the deaths registered in the Region, Baguio City had the greatest percentage of deaths attended by health professionals at 41%.
  • The fewest number of recorded deaths among the Provinces assisted by a health professional  is Ifugao with 124 deaths.

Burial most preferred corpse disposal in the Region  

  • Ninety six percent recorded deaths in the Cordillera Administrative Region were buried during the 3rd quarter of 2022. Benguet had the most corpses buried recorded at 23.4%, while, Ifugao had the least registered deaths with 8.7%.
  • Another alternative corpse disposal in the Region is through cremation with 3.7% of the total registered deaths.
  • Baguio City had the highest recorded deaths cremated with 8 in every 10 cremations, it was followed by the province of Benguet with nearly 4 out of every 25 cremations.

Nearly 8 in every 10 Male Deaths occurred at age 64-69

  • Figure 2 shows that  death rates are lower in the younger age groups and as people age, the number of deaths increases. 
  • In terms of recorded deaths, men aged 64 to 69 had the greatest recorded deaths, accounting for nearly  8 in every 10 deaths in the Region, whereas, females aged 64-69 recorded 6 in every 10 deaths.
  • Compared to deaths among men, deaths among females aged 94 and older were nearly three times greater.
  • Sixteen out of twenty five deaths in the Region belong to the seniors, 60 yrs old and over.
