Chicken Inventory increased by 12.45 percent in the province 

The chicken inventory in the province increased to 237,699 birds as of October 1, 2024.  This showed an increase of 12.45 percent compared to the same period of 2023, which is 211,377 birds.  (See Table 1) 

            Among the farm classification, Semi-Commercial posted the highest increase with 118.18 percent, with 4,800  birds in October 1, 2024 from 2,200 birds in the same period of 2023.  Moreover, smallhold recorded also an increase of 11.34 percent with 232,899 birds as of October 1, 2024 from 209,177 birds of the same period in 2023. 

 

 

Native/Improved chicken top in inventory among chicken types in the province as of October 1, 2024 and October 1, 2023

            Native/Improved chicken had the highest estimated number of birds among chicken types as of October 1, 2024 with 231,851 birds, Layer chicken follows with 4,800 birds and Gamefowl chicken with 1,048 birds.

 

Similar of the same period in 2023, Native/Improved has still the highest number with 209,177 birds, Layer chicken with 2,200 birds and no recorded inventory for Gamefowl of the same period.

 

 

 

Duck Inventory also increased by 14.73 percent 

Duck Inventory in the province also increased to 128,140 fowls as of October 1, 2024 from 111,687 fowls of the same period in 2023 with 14.73 percent increase

 

 

 

Smallhold farm showed a decrease of 10.13 percent from 111,687 fowls of same period in 2023.  The province produced 27,772 fowls in October 1, 2024 in the Semi-Commercial farm but has no inventory in 2023.

Chicken has the highest percentage share with 64 % among the Poultry Animal Type as of October 1, 2024

Among the 369,579 total inventory of Poultry animals in the province. Chicken recorded the highest share of inventory with 237,699 birds as of October 1, 2024 followed by duck with 128,140 flocks, quail with 1,510 birds and turkey with 1,230 birds.  Goose has the least inventory with 1,000 flocks recorded during the same period.

 

 

 

Technical Notes

Poultry – a collective term for all domesticated avian for the purpose of food consumption or, the carcass of such avian are processed for human consumption.

Layer – foreign strain chicken regardless of age, raised mainly for egg production.

Native/Improved chicken – a common backyard fowl that is a mixture of native breeds and foreign breeds which includes Banaba, Bolinao, Kabir, Bantam, Paraokan, and Heritage Chicken such as Rhode Island Red (RIR).

Duck – a general term for waterfowl

Goose – a large waterbird with a long neck, short legs, webbed feet, and a short broad bill.  Generally, geese are larger than ducks and have longer necks and shorter bills.

Quail – refers to a small bird commonly raised for egg production and is also known as pugo.

Turkey – a large, domesticated bird native to North America, having a baid head and (in the male) red wattles that is raised for its meat.

Animal Population (Also Animal Inventory) – the actual number of animals in (head/bird) present in the farms as of specific date regardless of ownership

Household – A person or group of persons who sleep under the same dwelling unit and usually have a common arrangement in the preparation and consumption of food.  The household members may not necessarily be related by ties of kinship, although they are usually relatives.  In some instances, more than one household may occupy the same housing unit.

Establishment – an economic unit that engages under a single ownership or control, i.e., under single legal entity; in one or predominantly one kind of economic activity at a single fixed physical location.  Thus stores, shops, factories, mining companies, electric plants, transport companies, radio stations, hotels, restaurants, banks, insurance companies, real estate development companies, and the like are considered establishment.

 

The following are the new farm classifications and definitions of chicken type based on the approved PSA Board Resolution No. 04, series of 2022.
