Production

The 2021 corn production at 31,555.12 metric tons, decreased by 15.9 percent from the 37,528.90 metric tons output in 2020. By corn type, white corn registered 85.12 metric tons, a decrease of 74.5 percent from its 333.90 level a year ago. Likewise, yellow corn dropped to 31,470.00 metric tons or 15.4 percent from the 2020 record of 37,195.00 metric tons. (Figure 1 and Table 1)

Yellow corn production shared more than 99.0 percent to the total output in 2020 to 2021. Less than a percent was shared by white corn for the same period. (Figure 2 and Table 2)

 

Harvest Area

In 2021, harvest area contracted to 7,115.00 hectares or by 12.3 percent from the 2020 level of 8,112.00 hectares but higher than its level in 2019. By corn type, white and yellow corn were recorded at 42.00 hectares and 7,073.00 hectares, respectively. In the same order, both registered a decrement of 65.0 percent and 11.5 percent from their respective levels of 120.00 hectares and 7,992.00 hectares in 2020 (Figure 3 and Table 1)

Yield per Hectare

Yield per hectare decreased from 4.63 metric tons in 2020 to 4.44 metric tons in 2021, however it surpassed the 2019 level of 3.93 metric tons. A double-digit decrease was recorded in white corn. (Figure 4 and Table 1)

 

Farmgate Price

In 2021, the average farmgate price of yellow corn was PhP13.58 per kilogram, 25.7 percent higher than the previous year’s level of PhP10.80 per kilogram. The highest price increase of 44.4 percent was noted in July. (Figure 5 and Table 3)

CONCEPTS AND DEFINITIONS

Crop Production- refers to the quantity produced and actually harvested for a particular crop during the reference period. It includes those harvested but damaged, stolen, given away consumed, given as harvester’s and thresher’s shares, reserved, etc. However, it excludes those produced but not harvested due to low price, lack of demand and force majeure or fortuitous events, etc.

Harvest Area - - refers to the actual area from which harvests were realized. This excludes crop area that was totally damaged. It may be smaller than the area planted.

Types of Corn

• Yellow Corn - type of corn used generally as feed grains. It includes all types of corn other than white.

• White Corn- type of corn used primarily for human consumption.

Metric ton - refers to a unit that is being used which is equal to 1,000 kilograms.

Farmgate prices - are prices received by farmers for the sale of their produce at their first point of sale during their last transaction within the reference period.
