The Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) celebrates the 25th year of the National Statistics Month or NSM this October 2014. This annual month-long celebration started in 1990 by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 647 signed by the late President Corazon C. Aquino on 20 September 1990. The yearly celebration aims to promote, enhance and instill nationwide awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics in the different sectors of Philippine society. The NSM also serves as a vehicle for ensuring the cooperation and support of the general public in upgrading the quality and standards of statistics in the country.
Since 1990, the former National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB), now part of the newly created Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), took the lead in the NSM celebrations, Starting this year, the PSA spearheads the celebration with the PSA technical staff serving as the secretariat at the national and regional levels.
The celebration of the NSM has been made relevant by identifying a theme each year. The host for this year’s celebration is the PSA with the theme:
“NSM at 25 and Beyond: Solid and Responsive Philippine Statistical System in Support of Globalization and Regional Economic Integration”
with Filipino translation:
“Ang NSM sa ika 25 Taon at Higit: Matatag at Nakatutugong Sistemang Pang-estadistika ng Pilipinas bilang Pagtaguyod sa Globalisasyon at Integrasyong Pang-ekonomiya ng Rehiyon”
PSA-CAR will kick-off the NSM celebration in the Cordilleras through a Kapihan to be held on October 2, 2014 starting 12:00 noon at El Cielito Inn in coordination with the Philippine Information Agency. Engr. Olivia G. Gulla, Interim Regional Director of PSA-CAR, will serve as lead panelist and will be joined by the former regional heads of NSCB, Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS) and a representative from the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) in CAR. The NSM closing program in CAR will coincide with the data dissemination of the results of the latest National Demographic Health Survey on October 29, 2014, venue to be announced.
This October 2014, a number of activities throughout the Cordilleras will be conducted by various agencies, local government units, academe and the media as part of the 25th NSM celebration. The NSM activities enrolled are as follows:
