Province of Benguet

Located at the southern end of the Cordillera Region is the province of Benguet. Bounded on the south by Pangasinan and on the west by La Union and Ilocos Sur, Benguet serves as the gateway to the highland provinces of the Cordillera Region.

At 5,000 feet above sea level, the province lies on top of the Cordillera Mountains. Rugged and sloping terrain and deep valleys characterize the province. Amidst these mountain peaks is a wide plateau wherein the capital town, La Trinidad, is located. A total of 13 municipalities and 140 barangays make up the province.

As of 2010, Benguet has a total land area of 2,833.0 square kilometers with most of it falling within the Cordillera Forest Reserve. Forest land totals 214,523 hectares with forest land comprising 0f 105,626 hectares as of May 2007.

In the sparsely populated Cordillera Region, as of May 2010 Benguet stands out as having the biggest population among the provinces and city with 403,494. However, it is next to Baguio City for its population density of 142.4 persons per square kilometer. Migrants have joined the local tribes such as the Kankana-ey, Ibaloy and Kalanguya to settle in this rich highland province. Although the three tribes speak different dialects, they share similar cultures and have common beliefs and rituals.

The Philippine Statistics Authority has rebased the CPI for all income households from 2012 to 2018 based year. The rebasing was done to ensure that the CPI market basket to capture goods and services commonly purchased by households, to update expenditure patterns of households and to synchronize its base year with 2018 base year of the Gross Regional Domestic Product and other indices produced by PSA. Root crops are the third most important crops in the Philippines, after rice and corn. They are traditional crops that are easy to cultivate and can easily adapt to a broad range of agro-ecological conditions. The common root crops grown in the country are cassava, sweet potato, yam, ube, arrowroot, tugui, and singkamas. Of the above-mentioned common crops grown in the country, carrots, cassava (for food), radish, sweet potato and white potato are the commodities included in the market basket of the province. The total population of Benguet as of May 1, 2020 was 460,683 persons. Of this total, the household population comprised 99.74 percent or 459,468 persons. This is higher by 14,834 persons over the 2015 census figure of 444,634, and 56,339 more than the 403,129 household population posted in 2010. The total population of Baguio City as of May 1, 2020 was 366,358 persons. Of this total, the household population comprised 99.12 percent or 363,151 persons. This is higher by 20,951 persons over the 2015 census figure of 342,200, and 47,351 more than the 315,800 household population posted in 2010.
